Dominik Schulz, born in 1990 in Stuttgart, began his musical training at age 8 on the piano. At 14 he switched from trumpet to bassoon and never looked back. Dominik earned his B.M. at Mannes College The New School for Music under Kim Laskowski (Associate Principal Bassoonist of the New York Philharmonic) before moving to Frankfurt to study with David Petersen (Principal Bassoonist of the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig).

 

Dominik has performed on Broadway's The Phantom of the Opera as well as with the Frankfurt Opera Orchestra, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Robert Schumann Philharmonie/Theater Chemnitz, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, among others.  2015-17 he was the bassoon Akademist in the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig, for the 2017-18 season he was engaged as principal bassoonist of the Comic Opera Leipzig. For the 2018-19 season he was contracted in the Robert Schumann Philharmonie/Theater Chemnitz and from 2019 to 2021 was engaged as principal bassoonist of the Anhaltische Philharmonie Dessau.

 

Near and dear to his heart is the intimate connection between audience members and performers in chamber music settings. Together with colleagues from the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig, the Frankfurt Opera Orchestra, and the Orchestra of the Comic Opera Leipzig, he formed the Leitzinger Bassoon Quartet; together they give concerts and masterclasses worldwide, and their debut album "Lei(p)tzinger Allerlei" was released in 2015 on the classical music label "querstand." He has also had the opportunity to collaborate with artists such as Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Sébastian Jacot, and Philippe Tondre, and performed regularly on the chamber music series "Klassik Underground."

Dominik's many arrangements and compositions for everything from solo to marching bands are performed worldwide. Performers and commissioners include the Gewandhaus zu Leipzig, members of the New York Philharmonic, and Andris Nelsons.

Since 2022 he has been the Bassoon Product Manager and Head of Product Management at Reeds 'n Stuff GmbH.
